Advice on risk assessment related to the use of work equipment.

Support for Employers

Discover the recommended methods and solutions for preparing a risk assessment document

If you manage a production plant, you likely know that the common belief when assessing work equipment risks is that a machine declared compliant, for instance, in line with EU Directives, is inherently safe and that this alone satisfies the employer’s safety obligations.

However, it is important to recognize that the machine manufacturer is often aware of certain residual risks beyond those related to the environment where the equipment is installed. There may also be obvious defects, such as the absence of safety guards, which could impact the safe use by workers.
Proper preparation of the risk assessment document is your solution. This document, known as RAD, seeks to identify the risks associated with the use, cleaning, and maintenance of machinery while also examining working conditions, environmental hazards, and potential interference with other equipment.

Our task is to guide you in creating clear and targeted documents that minimize risks during work and maintenance and provide tangible benefits for your operators’ safety.

Operating Instructions and training

Request support for the development of risk mitigation procedures

Following the risk assessment for the use of the equipment, where machines meet legal requirements, potential improvements can focus on organizational measures, including instructions, procedures, and staff training.

Our expertise in automation helps you identify areas for improvement, enabling the development of practical operating instructions. This ensures your operators know the risks and the appropriate mitigation measures to apply in different operating situations.

Maintaining safety requirements

Request support for the development of a maintenance plan

Even if the employer has fulfilled their equipment compliance responsibilities, thoroughly assessed the associated risks in the work environment, and trained their operators, they must still ensure that the equipment’s safety requirements are consistently maintained, as mandated by law.

With our consultancy, you will receive support in defining maintenance plans that meet safety requirements in accordance with current legislation and regulatory standards.

To simplify the updating and maintenance of safety documentation, you can equip your HSE department with H-DOCS software developed by our technicians specifically for your team.

In the Italian context, for instance, Article 71 of Legislative Decree 81/08 advises assessing the specific conditions and characteristics of the work performed, the risks present in the environment, and the risks arising from the use of the equipment or interference with other equipment in use. The law defines the employer's responsibilities as:
  • Providing workers with equipment that complies with safety requirements
  • Assessing the risks associated with using work equipment
  • Implementing appropriate prevention and protection measures to reduce risks
  • Training and educating staff on the risks and the prevention and protection measures they should adopt

There may be risks associated with using work equipment even when the equipment is compliant, and these must be considered to ensure operator safety. For example, if you were to replace the mold of a plastic molding machine weighing two tonnes without an overhead crane, despite the machine’s conformity, there would still be a significant risk of crushing during the mold replacement process.

To mitigate risks, suitable measures might include installing a crane or providing a forklift system to slide and remove the mold when replacing it in a plastic molding machine. We recommend expanding the scope of your risk assessments by anticipating the necessary mitigation measures to reduce workers’ exposure to risks when using equipment, even before it is installed.
